Thembsie Matu has just joined a long list of celebrities, who have strongly spoken out against the blesser phenomenon – sugar daddies showering women with an awful lot of expensive gifts – which has taken South Africa by storm.

While many may be hugely benefitting from this trend, Thembsie, who stars on Rockville as Sis Ribs, expressed how it has rubbed her off the wrong way.

In reference to the current storyline on Rockville, in which a 16-year-old teen is dating an older and married man, Thembsie weighed in on the idea of blessers, labelling it as “disgusting".

“Personally, I do not agree with the idea of blessers, it is absolutely disgusting,” she told Move.

“For me, a 16-year-old is still a child. They are still soft, vulnerable and they are not emotionally matured.”

Thembsie is not the first celebrity to openly criticise the blesser trend.

Taking to Instagram in May, TV and radio personality Ntombi Mzolo explained how there are other options for women besides having to succumb to blessers, despite any of life’s challenges.

"This is very disturbing for me. I’m not one to judge, but I honestly think there are other solutions.  We all have our share of challenges and no one is perfect, but the one thing that makes others seem better or stronger than others are the decisions they make. Let’s not allow temporal challenges or situations destroy our lives."
