She’s feisty and has kept Scandal! Viewers on their toes as the evil Thembeka. Now, actress Masasa Mbangeni is taking a break after five years on the show.
Back in the day we had Ntsiki in Generations (Pamela Nomvete) and the manipulative Cherel de Villiers-Haines in Isidingo (Michelle Botes). They were so convincing as villains that the actresses sometimes got a tongue-lashing from members of the public while they were out shopping.
It seemed Masasa Mbangeni, who plays the evil Thembeka Shezi-Nyathi in Scandal!, had taken up the baton to follow in Pamela and Michelle’s footsteps with just as much fervour. But now, five years later, Masasa is taking a break from Thembeka.
The actress announced her departure from her award-winning role last month, but don’t expect her exit in May to be scandalous. “Her character, Thembeka, remains alive in the Scandal! world. Viewers can expect her back on the show in the future,” says e.tv’s publicist Michael Pocock.
As a cunning femme fatale, Thembeka will go to any lengths to get what she wants. But we see a different person when Port Elizabeth-born Masasa paysa visit to our Auckland Park office.
Warm yet soft-spoken with an air of reserve, she’s moved by the reception the South African public has given her.
