IDOLS SA judge Gareth Cliff got his marching orders from the show.
His controversial comment regarding the race debate around estate agent Penny Sparrow’s Facebook post sparked a Twitter storm.
Responding to questions on whether to criminalise racist posts on social media, Gareth said: “People really don’t understand free speech at all.”
Twitter users then lashed out at Gareth, with calls to boycott IdolsSA.
Gareth later apologised. But this didn’t spare him his job.
And when M-Net issued a statement on Friday, confirming his dismissal as a judge of the reality show, he responded by saying he would seek legal advice.
When called for comment, Gareth confirmed he is seeking legal opinion following his dismissal.
“I have no comment on this matter, but I’m seeking legal opinion. That’s all I can say for now,” he said.
M-Net said Gareth would not be part of the judging panel for Idols SA season 12, which is due to commence with countrywide auditions later this month.
M-Net announced: “M-Net thanks Cliff for the critical role he has played in seeking out and developing new talent over the years and for contributing to the success of the show to date..”
