Mfundo Nkosi and Bongani Masombuka were found in possession of a hijacked Jeep Wrangler which was allegedly used in the attempted hijacking of Masilela. They were also in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
In their first court appearance, the two original suspects were charged with possession of a hijacked Jeep and an unlicensed firearm. A third suspect was later identified.
According to police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini, the three suspects being held for the botched hijacking of Masilela, will appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court on charges of murder today.
On 8 September, Benoni Magistrate’s Court, state prosecutor Lumka Phoswa told the court that two sets of fingerprints were found in the hijacked Jeep Wrangler allegedly used in the attempted hijacking of Masilela. One set was positively linked to Mfundo Nkosi.
According to evidence by Constable Mthokozisi Ngwenya, Nkosi handed himself over and “confessed” to the hijacking.
Bongani Masombuka was linked to the crime through 205 cell phone records.
The second set of fingerprints is suspected to belong to a man who was in custody at the Germiston Police Station after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm. However, at the last court appearance, police were still waiting the results of a fingerprint comparison.
The magistrate stood down the matter for police to obtain the results of the fingerprints.
The third suspect is said to be the one who fired the shot that killed Masilela. However, police said that the suspect refused to have his fingerprints taken and take part in an identity parade until he had spoken to a lawyer.
Masilela and a friend were parked on the side of the road in a Golf 7 when the suspects approached them in the hijacked Jeep. They tried to flee, but the suspects opened fire on the Golf 7 and Masilela was shot in the upper body.
He was rushed to hospital where he died later, as a result of his injuries.
