South African kwaito star, Sipho Ndlovu, known as Brickz, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for raping a relative.
Ndlovu was found guilty of raping his 16-year-old niece at his Ruimsig home in 2013.
He had spent a month in jail before being released on R50,000 bail.
Sentencing was postponed after the defence was not ready to proceed with closing arguments.
After Ndlovu was found guilty in June, he changed his legal team which resulted in further delays in the trial.
While the defence had asked the court to consider Ndlovu’s status and influence on younger males when passing a sentence, saying through charity work and further rehabilitation it is clear that the convicted rapist is not a threat to society and can continue being a role model.
Magistrate John Baloyi handed down the sentence a in the last hour.
“These circumstances elevate the seriousness of the rape and renders the minimum sentence of 20 years as crossly inadequate. In the result, the accused is sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.”
