We know the UK’s drawn out process of leaving the EU has caused immigration and travel concerns for people all around the globe. With the UK soon to be out of the EU though, it’s time to look at travel for South Africans to remaining EU countries.

BusinessTech have confirmed with the department of home affairs that visa-free travel to the EU is “still in the works.” Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba stated in September last year that the EU was looking at relaxing or eliminating visa requirements for South Africans.

Some of the measures being considered are: evaluating the feasibility of multiple-entry visas for SA business travellers to the EU. As well as the possibility of “full exemptions” for South African leisure travellers.  Last year Gigaba indicated that these new regulations could be implemented by March 2016, but as we know these things take plenty of time, especially considering the EU has so much going on right now.

On our side Home Affairs say all their work is done, they have made the recommendations to EU countries and now wait to hear back from them within the coming months. A Home Affairs spokesperson also clarified that the decision is made on a country-by country basis.

While getting in and out of the UK could soon be a bit more complicated and confusing, travelling to EU countries may soon be easier than ever for South African’s. It’s important to bear in mind though that things could change at any time, a host of EU countries are experiencing a rise of populism and standing against open borders. Upcoming elections in France and Germany will play a big role in travel to and from EU countries.
