Charges of racism‚ tax evasion and illegal business operation have been opened against Sodwana Bay Guest House owner Andre Slade.
KwaZulu-Natal economic development MEC Sihle Zikalala on Wednesday morning made a statement at the Mbazwana police charge office and called for strong action to be taken.
He earlier revealed that Slade - whose guest house gained notoriety for not accepting black guests or government employees - did not have a business license and got his permission to lease the land from the tribal authority under false pretenses.
Department spokesman Bheko Madlala said Zikalala wanted a charge of racial discrimination‚ or crimen injuria‚ to be investigated alongside those of allegedly operating a business without a legal license and tax evasion.
Head of department Desmond Golding told TMG Digital that because Slade was not operating legally‚ it was likely that he was not paying tax. The South African Revenue Service would also be approached to investigate.
Addressing tourism stakeholders‚ community members and local traditional authorities‚ Zikalala said that‚ on top of the charges‚ he wanted Slade's business to be suspended and for him to be evicted from the tribal land.
Government officials and members of the African National Congress Youth League were planning a march to the premises.
