Ngqamakhwe police arrested a 25-year-old man after he allegedly robbed a woman who turned down his advances, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.
"The allegation is that a 25-year-old woman was travelling from Ndenxe village to Ntabeni village at Ngqamakhwe on Saturday... at about [2pm].
While she passed near a certain forest she met a man unknown to her," Captain Jackson Manatha said.
"The man stopped her and persuaded her to fall in love with him. The request of the man was rejected. The man became furious and robbed the woman of her cellphone and a small amount of money. The woman cried out bitterly," he said.
Community members were alerted about the robbery and they "chased the suspect and caught up with him". He was handed to Ngqamakhwe police. "The suspect was arrested and charged with common robbery. The cellphone and undisclosed small amount of money was also recovered," Manatha said.
The man would appear in the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate's Court on Monday. Butterworth police cluster commander Brigadier Trevor Mey thanked the members of the community for their assistance in fighting crime, "as they are ears and eyes of the police".
