While Vuwani residents boycotted the local government elections, the rest of South Africa flocked to the polling stations to make their marks. We round up some of the top stories from the day...
1) Boos, heckling and THAT poster
ANC NEC member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was booed‚ jeered and heckled at Inchanga‚ west of Durban‚ while in Johannesburg a man had to be escorted from the Killarney Country Club after heckling former Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.
2) Party leaders lead the pack
EFF leader Julius Malema says his party has put up a good fight in the lead-up to the 2016 local elections while DA leader Mmusi Maimane said it was pleasing that nobody knew who was going to win elections. IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi had an emotional reunion as he prepared to vote and a smiling Jacob Zuma urged people to vote.
3) The fight for Nelsona Mandela Bay, Tshwane and Joburg
ANC's Tshwane mayoral hopeful Thoka Didiza said she believed the party had done enough to ensure the ANC retained the hotly contested city of Tshwane, while Nelson Mandela Bay’s mayoral candidates cast their votes around the Bay where voters endured cold, windy weather to make their mark.
4) Quiet in Vuwani
The troubled town of Vuwani was the only one in Limpopo under intense police watch‚ with voting proceeding smoothly just about everywhere else in the province.
6) Gunfire, protests and deaths
Two voters died in election day queues‚ some electoral officials were involved in car accidents and in Cape Town voting was disrupted after a gang shootout erupted in the vicinity of an election polling station.
7) Hiccups and bad weather
Weather played havoc in some areas on election day, while apart from some minor incidents voting appeared to have been smooth in most places.
